Why Scoring goals are a mistake
I’ve heard golfers say that they want to shoot a particular score in their next round I think that is a mistake. I’ll explain why and give you an alternative way.
If you’re teeing off expecting to shoot a particular score you already placed too much emphasis on results. Golf requires a lot of patience and it’s tough to do when you feel like every shot is taking you closer or further away from the score you really want to shoot.
Every round of golf can be a bit of a roller coaster, emotionally and internally I think that’s part of what hooks us into playing the game. However, constantly worrying about your score exacerbates this trend. As you play you are reacting so strongly in both directions as this all occurs during and after every shot; then your decision making starts to suffer and when golfers get upset and see the round slipping away, they become more aggressive and reckless now you’re pouring gasoline on a fire. Perhaps the most damaging part of attempting to shoot a particular score is that it very often ruins the golfer’s enjoyment of their game. Have you ever heard a golfer declare the day, a whole failure on the fourth or fifth hole, or after a blow-up hole?
So, what should you do, I’m not suggesting not to care about your score I care, however approaching a round with a neutral mindset, with a committed clear game plan, sticking to a process, routine into and out of golf shots would be a more useful goal.
Learn to focus on each step of your process not the outcome.
Having fun, no matter what. Going through my routine precisely the way you know how. Carrying out calm, strategic decisions. Playing the shots, I can commit to walking into each shot.
I genuine believe golf is a series of independent decisions. Feeling the weight of expectations and results on each shot is exhausting. Every golfer needs to come to their version of what works for them. Many of you are playing with scoring expectations that are way out of line which is one of the big things holding you back. You must let go to gain more control over your game. Golf is counterintuitive.
