# What can you think about while you swing?
When a golfer is introduced to the game a significant amount of time is spent on technique, the “what” the “how” of several swings. It’s about the golf swing, keep a steady head with irons, where are your hands here or there, don’t forget to do this, we are programmed to consciously think about what our bodies are doing at all times and it doesn’t stop either no matter what level of play the dominant form of instructional constantly focuses on the movement of the golf swing. Because of this collective agreement or way of doing things, significant time and attention has always been put on how we swing. In the thinking about many of these things, before during and after we swing frequently, this results in most golfers playing golf swing rather than playing and creating golf shots.
Here is a powerful concept to understand and use during your golf swing.
Where you decide to be internally be whilst in motion, is called **Locus of Attention**.
As a golfer, we can’t completely control our minds, and thoughts whilst over the ball. However, I strongly encourage a golfer to consider one of these three options,
## Three Loki:
- **Internal focus**, concentrating on the move your actual golf swing, repeating the one verbal cue multiple times during your swing or right before you swing.
- **External focus**, putting attention outside of your body. This could be concentrating on striking a certain part of the club- face brushing a blade of grass in front of the golf ball, envisioning a certain shot shape or trajectory, creating a certain sound.
- **Neutral** focus, unrelated to the movement or process of the golf shot. A simple example is focusing on breathing, another could be humming a song, (using clear key).
I am on the of the belief that if more golfers will start to move away from just internal swing thoughts especially on the golf course and start to shift their attention elsewhere. Explore, to figure out what can help calm them and free up their bodies to execute athletically fluid golf shots. This can be supported by learning to train golf shots via purposeful and game like challenges, one shot/ singular shots with a full process. (targeted shot making training).
By training with an external focus, it’ll be easier to take it to the golf course. This can get you out of SWING jail. What are you a constantly thinking about? Let your brain, body respond to the shot in front of you. What is the next task with the ball? Commit to priming and being in there, responding, creating a fluid free swing with full intent towards your chosen target.
Spending time with a coach, experimenting for yourself on the practice area and on the golf course on where your thinking, your focusing best serves you during your swing. Since we all are individuals, it’s best to figure out for yourself. What kinds of thoughts can help you get better results.
I know overall, most of you will see, incremental success, going from internal to external thoughts, and for those of you who are a bit more experienced in the game neutral focus can let you unleash your abilities This can all contribute to golfers making breakthroughs when out on the course just as much when out on the course , as well as when competing.
